I use vim slime running in a split next to my code window. You can use the built-in vim terminal running either the standard REPL or an IPython shell if you prefer. You can send code blocks to the terminal with C-c (works for visual selection as well) and work interactively. Working this way has replaced probably 90% of my jupyter usage.
