You can use Processing to make generative art. The Nature of Code: Simulating Natural Systems with Processing by Daniel Shiffman will teach you how to use physics engines and other advanced techniques. Personally I prefer to make simple geometric art. I also like isometric grids for that retro game look. I'm still experimenting to generate isometric cities with random buildings.
