If you want a compact split with plenty of keys, I would recommend the ergodash, which is open sourced and can be bought prebuilt.
Great post! Just for some additional context: for a well established board such as the kyria, I would assume that you can indeed more or less plug it in and start using it. While it's true that you have to flash the MCUs once, there is a default keymap available that gets you started, so you don't have to come up with a custom layout right from the start. Once you find out what you need, there are tools similar to Oryx that support a more graphical approach to designing a keymap, such as the QMK Configurator, Via and Vial. So while it's definitely more involved than a ready built keyboard, I'd argue anyone who can put one together will figure out how to get it running rather easily 😁🤞
