Hi, I'm currently updating my Minecraft Survival Multiplayer server, and I'm trying to decide whether to use Petal or Pufferfish+. One thing that about Petal that appealed to me, however, was the fact that it is open source, unlike Pufferfish+ and it's Purpur equivalent. This made me curious, why do many servers use custom server software? Are there advantages that cannot be accomplished with just plugins and require a custom platform, or is it something else? Any response is greatly appreciated :)
If you are hosting a survival server, consider using fabric because the performance increase is nearly the same as purpur and maybe even petal (depending on the mode you use) but it doesn’t break vanilla parity (again kinda dependent on the mods you use) this github repo has most performance mods that are out for fabric 1.19, use only some of the server sided ones if you chose to go that route
