As for combining systray and alpha, that's more tricky than one might think. You could try my alpha-systray patch (which is systray on top of alpha). I know there's a different one out there as well, the difference being whether the systray is within (i.e. on top of) the bar or next to it.
If you want integration hints for various patches for a traditional bar then I have some in an old build of mine - just note that what happens in drawbar must also happen in buttonpress.
