  • torsocks

Library to torify application - NOTE: upstream has been moved to https://gitweb.torproject.org/torsocks.git

  • VPN, or preferably, TOR Encrypting all your inbound and outbound traffic (not just HTTP) should be your first step. A VPN encrypts all traffic coming to and from the device. This is your best friend in terms of simplicity, speed and reliability. Your best free options are ProtonVPN’s free tier, and Windscribe VPN who’s also tripling their free data cap for Ukrainians. TOR is a bit more complicated technical-wise. Put simply, it goes much further than a VPN by routing encrypted traffic through multiple areas on an open network. This is a free tool essential for journalists and free speech practicers in high risk regions. You can access this through the TOR browser or, if possible, TailsOS. The browser is recommended. It’s free, simple and powerful. (Note: Do NOT try to look for a TOR browser alternative on iOS devices. There’s an explanation, but just avoid them)

  • Desktop-App

Windscribe 2.0 desktop client for Windows, Mac and Linux (by Windscribe)

  • Tutanota makes encryption easy

Tuta is an email service with a strong focus on security and privacy that lets you encrypt emails, contacts and calendar entries on all your devices.

  • Encrypted E-mail If you’re E-mailing as a method of outside communication, ensure that your provider has end-to-end encryption on their services. For this, you’ll want to use either Tutanota or ProtonMail. You’ll want to make sure the person on the other end of the email is also using an encrypted provider. If you can avoid E-mails, Session (above) is the best option.

  • TextSecure

    A private messenger for Android.

  • Encrypted instant communications Communications are critical in a time like this, and you’ll want to make sure your texts, calls and more are safe. Your first choice should be Session, which doesn’t store message metadata, and sends all encrypted messages through multiple areas. The downside is that it does not have calls yet. For calls, Signal is the next best choice.

  • linux-cli-community

Linux command-line client for ProtonVPN. Written in Python.
