To get back on track; with regards to your point of a code editor being distracting, I've found that VimTeX conceal functions (preamble, sections, as well as in-text stuff conceals like\cite[n]{MyReference} -> [Reference]; \textit{foo} -> foo etc.) makes it a lot less distracting than the vanilla experience. When that is combined with the other functions ViM provides in terms of its shear editing experience (movements, replace functions etc.), bib-file integration, searching in text or files using telescope, and so on, it's a lot more effective for me personally, than writing in a WYSIWYG editor. Not to mention the result is so much better.

LiTeX-mode which converts lisp to latex, as well as does automated solution with steps from the formula till the final value.
