After using that for a couple of days and getting comfortable, I wanted 'just' a bit more improvement, which is how I ended up with Qwickly-2 etc (on the same linked page). I even wrote a blog post of my journey. Ultimately, I evolved it into Qwicker (Mod R) (something of a tweaked NIRO) which strikes a good balance of comfort/speed and ease of transition. My only regret is sticking with learning N-R-I-O (right hand) so long when it felt so uncomfortable thinking it's only because I haven't built up dexterity of IO/OI. Shuffling to N-I-R-O was so much better but took longer to unlearn NRIO. Good luck on your journey!
I love the similar journeys and rediscovery that happens in this area. Before committing to a big layout change, I also wondered what's the minimum set of changes from Qwerty that would give a significant benefit. I came up with a similarly inspired Qwickly-1 layout swapping more frequent keys to home row rather than entire row-swaps.
