Nim
Nim is a statically typed compiled systems programming language. It combines successful concepts from mature languages like Python, Ada and Modula. Its design focuses on efficiency, expressiveness, and elegance (in that order of priority).
I'm not sure if Nimterop was created specifically to make Nim more mainstream. We have quite a couple different C/C++ interop tools, from c2nim in the core distribution to something like Futhark which automatically wraps things based on libclang.
As for current goals you can read the Roadmap for Nim to see what the compiler developers are up to. And maybe watch the upcoming FOSDEM talks to see some of what people are doing in Nim (that list is not exhaustive, we have a half-day devroom but we're finalizing the schedule at the moment).
