I recommend u try JOOQ, we moved from Exposed to it, but I don't remember why. It has a lot of features like generating POJOs from database schema and allow us to create typesafe queries in a nice way.
I just wanted to +1 the above. I have used spring with Kafka, Rabbit MQ, REST interface, GRPC interface. start.spring.io is so easy to bootstrap an enterprise-grade application it's hard to justify not using it for a JVM-based project.
