This doesn't answer the question, but I though you might be interested by this script that replace the default blank i3 lock screen with a blurred screenshot of your screen (blurred enough for us not to see what's happening on your desktop) with a lock icon on it. It is more design ! So if you are interested, do not hesitate to bind it to your lock shortcut (Meta + L for me, the same on Windows) !
