Just came to plug my plugin, which supplies a subset of Vimwiki's functionality but is for Markdown only and is implemented in Lua: https://github.com/jakewvincent/mkdnflow.nvim. I use it by itself for notes unless I need to publish a page, in which case I have a couple of separate commands defined for running pandoc in whatever file I'm editing.
