Nice. So far I just used undo-fu, which implements something a simple undo-redo functionality on top of emacs' undo system. But I didn't know this is built-in into emacs 28. I just looked checked and it's also supported as by evil already, so I guess I can set
But I don't see built-in undo-persist functionality, so I will keep using undo-fu-persist, which is independent of undo-fu and should also store the built-in emacs undo history.
So I fell victim to MELPA's versioning policy as well as its later removal of this package from the repo (https://github.com/melpa/melpa/issues/3004).
That said, the situations seems murky still: the version in ELPA is newer (0.7.5), but it's still outdated, the home page advertises 0.8.2 as the latest version. And it moved to a different repository location. And looking at its history, it seems to never have included the version 0.7.5: https://gitlab.com/tsc25/undo-tree/-/commit/5da2a7aee98393d26a93c499dc79fcf793f161e1
