I use a totally vanilla GameCube controller. My only trick is to use the debug display in M'Overlay to see whether my stick is currently well-calibrated to get relatively consistent -1.0 cardinals in the left notch. Typically I have to sit there and repeatedly close/reopen Dolphin with my thumb holding the stick in just slightly different positions until I get a good calibration and can actually start my attempts.
