After getting some powerline errors I did a checkhealth and I 'm a bit confused....

  Powerline is a statusline plugin for vim, and provides statuslines and prompts for several other applications, including zsh, bash, tmux, IPython, Awesome and Qtile.

  

I've got bad news, I did some more digging and it turns out powerline does not support NeoVim. See Issue #1287.
