For context, I was writing a mod named Luminor as a proof of concept for approximating spherical lighting attenuation (as opposed to the diamond shape lightning of vanilla Minecraft), which on a technical level propagates fractional light (think light level steps of 1.5) into the corner and edge blocks near light sources. As opposed to a fake radial shader effect (like what the handheld Optifine torch mod did), this would directly affect the lighting state of the world and mechanics that are sensitive to light levels would actually respond to the extra light.
