There are lighter-weight options for a NAS. One is openmediavault (OMV), which has its own sub r/OpenMediaVault. I ran OMV for a few years from a cheap 16 GB USB flash drive. This enabled all the SATA ports on the circa-2008 computer motherboard to be used for NAS drives. To learn more about OMV, search YouTube for techno dad life openmediavault.
OMV includes the capability to run server apps in Docker containers. One of these is Nextcloud, which may interest you, given your response above. The folks at Nextcloud wrote free companion iOS and Android apps for accessing the server. For more info, Google openmediavault docker nextcloud.
