given that you are dealing with multiple project/file settings, maybe tpope's sleuth woud help: https://github.com/tpope/vim-sleuth . I don't use it myself, but I definitely would if I had to deal with inconsistent projects. I'd also consider getting folks to agree on a standard ;) (maybe using editorconfig ?)
