Well, the fact that there are not a lot of Open Source game devs out there could be a reason and of course the complexity of developing games, after all, developing a game it's harder than developing an app. The app ecosystem of eOS is still growing so it's just matter of time for indie devs that like foss stuff to put their eyes on eOS. There are some efforts tho, there's Virgil (a game engine to create games for eOS).
About making eOS more unique in terms of gaming capability, there's GameHub (a dashboard compatible with a lot of tools and game platforms designed for elementary OS, however due to the nature of this app it wasn't accepted on the appStore, but you can still install it through flathub) and that app it's pretty impressive. Currently I'd say that I'm more focused about apps than games but any project that helps grow the community would be a great addition :D.
