I don't know if this is right but my config is here: https://github.com/lunamystry/dotfiles/tree/main/home and in that folder I run nix build .\#suifeng && ./result/activate (there is a # because I need to escape the # zsh) suifeng is a name for one of my machines.

  My dotfiles + system configuration for NixOS and mac (by nixypanda)

I have a directory called .dotfiles that is in the home directory i.e ~/.dotfiles which is tracked here. Now there are two directories system and users which contain the system configuration and home-manager configuration.
