I use it in combination with an extension on the marketplace called toggle-excluded-files which lets you quickly turn on and off the exclusion setting as needed. So, E.g. when you want to dig into a node module, you can toggle it on and explore the folder. Here it is: https://github.com/eamodio/vscode-toggle-excluded-files
