If you're fine with plugins, I recommend https://github.com/junegunn/fzf.vim
Every once in a while I'll use tpope/vim-projectionist to switch between test and implementation.
I like to use Buftabline https://github.com/ap/vim-buftabline and set the next/prev tab to /
I've been using BufExplorer for over a decade haven't really seen anything worth switching to so far...
One helpful plugin I haven't seen mentioned is vim-vinegar, which enhances the builtin netrw to make browsing directory structures much nicer. https://github.com/tpope/vim-vinegar
Highly recommend Denite. It gives you a graphical way to easily switch between buffers. It's super intuitive and fast.
I like to have a back and forward button like a browser: https://github.com/ckarnell/history-traverse
