Anyway, most new Lenovo ThinkPads have TrackPoint IV (versus the original TrackPoint II used in the Model M4-1, IBM-brand Model M13 and most early ThinkPads). The crucial difference between TrackPoint II and IV (and III) is a negative inertia function that significantly improved performance. To my knowledge, Lenovo TrackPoints are still PS/2 devices. This means that any PS/2 Model M with an integrated pointing device and a PS/2 passthrough port (such as PS/2 EnduraPro) can be retrofitted with a newer stick by using the passthrough port daughterboard inside as an easy solder point. The challenge would be extending the stick to the needed length without compromising performance. I never tried such a mod though since InterAccel for Windows was able to boost the old TrackPoints to an acceptable performance for me. But what I said should be theoretically possible. Iirc, Troy @ Unicomp once told us in a QnA that he's heard of a modern stick being retrofitted into an EnduraPro before.
