Unsatisfied with the existing solutions, I just created my own one: X-Pipe. In short, it is a brand-new type of connection manager and remote file explorer that works by only interacting with already installed command-line tools on local and remote shell connections, like the docker executable. This approach makes it much more flexible as it doesn't have to deal with file system APIs and remote file handling protocols at all. It also allows you to use your favorite text editor and open connections in your favorite terminal application. Here are a few screenshots:
