You might remember my similar post over a year ago! Well... I got to 40 states done with printing USA and thought they looked pretty bland as a single color so I spent the next year upgrading my printer with dual nozzles and designing multi-color 50 states.

TouchTerrain_for_CAGEO
Touch Terrain: A python app to create 3D printable terrain models (STL/OBJ) from only elevation data (via Google Earth Engine) or from a local geotiff. Has been used for CNC terrain models. Runs as a web app (http://touchterrain.org), as .py file (standalone.py) or as jupyter notebook. Docker image: https://github.com/ChHarding/TouchTerrain_jupyter_docker
The map scale is 1:2500000 with a 5x vertical exaggeration and the 3MF files have the base and waterline objects aligned for printing. USGS data, TouchTerrain, and DEM processing were used to generate the models. Chris, who is behind TouchTerrain, was very receptive to my feedback through the process and this would not be possible without his support.

I have put the steps and description of how here https://github.com/ansonl/DEM2STL. The relevant parts are split between the README and scratch.sh files. I would like to bring all the steps into a single script or app that people can run in the future but I'm still making changes to the calculations to improve the result.

Here’s a good video for anyone wanting to create terrain models. It shows how to gather the data and use QGIS to output a useable bitmap for common CNC carving methods.
