The number of mentions indicates the total number of mentions that we've tracked plus the number of user suggested alternatives.
Stars - the number of stars that a project has on GitHub. Growth - month over month growth in stars.
Activity is a relative number indicating how actively a project is being developed. Recent commits have higher weight than older ones.
For example, an activity of 9.0 indicates that a project is amongst the top 10% of the most actively developed projects that we are tracking.

is there any way to work on code without being near the robot?
We use Beta 8397's incredible https://github.com/Beta8397/virtual_robot as well. We actually program our robot into it so we can use our code as is. That is not exactly for the faint of heart, but it is an option. I suggest using one of the built-in robot configurations and modifying it to learn how.

Any hardware that's not $700 that can run FTC code?
Agree. We have used virtual robot for programming practice and training new programmers.

New to Coding
Agree with this. Also, you might want to check out virtual robot, which has built-in support for the "Learn Java for FTC" book and will allow you and your team to start programming without needing access to an actual robot. We have used both of these with some success.

Does Amazon Corretto 8 JDK include JavaFX?
I maintain this JavaFX project. It runs fine using Amazon Corretto 8 JDK on every Windows system I've tried it on. A user with a MacBook recently posted an issue (package javafx.application does not exist), which he or she fixed by switching to the Bell Liberica 1.8 dev kit.

Simulator that works with roadrunner?
Another +1 for Beta's excellent simulator at: https://github.com/Beta8397/virtual_robot

A question
We have used Learn Java for FTC with some success. In conjunction with this, we also use a virtual robot simulator which has support for the "programming board" hardware construct in the book. The simulator allows you to learn programming without having to buy an actual robot. Both of these are free.

Virtual Robot Simulator
I am using the virtual robot simulator(https://github.com/Beta8397/virtual_robot) and can't get it to run my op modes. When I click init it does nothing. The demo scripts work but mine doesn't and I'm not sure why. Can someone please explain why this might be happening?

I would highly recommend this library. You can tune variables quicker using it. https://github.com/acmerobotics/ftc-dashboard

Can a mac connect to Control Hub web server over USB?
Noted, thanks! Usually when we connect to the web interface, it's to use FTC Dashboard, which uses 8000 for the websocket.

Logging Data To Computer
FTC Dashboard lets you graph telemetry and download it as a csv file.

FTC Dashboard shows a live feed of the camera if u set it up right.

Robot stopping randomly
It could be a memory leak somewhere. If you use FTC Dashboard, make sure to update to the latest release (0.4.7) as it fixes a memory leak when the dashboard is installed but disabled, which was affecting some teams at competition. If you are using vision code, make sure you are not creating new objects every loop cycle, which will fill all system memory until it crashes. (We have had this issue multiple times in the past when we are using OpenCV-based detection, it's an easy mistake to make.)

Can you Run Op Modes without a separate driver hub?
Yeah - just run it from the dashboard. https://acmerobotics.github.io/ftc-dashboard/

TeleOp Code recurring disconnect issue
The SDK has a built in camera stream, which isn't great, but it can help. If you are willing to go a little more complex, look at ftc dashboard It has a few really great features including the ability to live view the camera stream and allowing you to set up variables so you can update them on the fly.
