Discussion Thread
TripleA is the most popular client I'm familiar with. Quite active. They have a bunch of variants but you can play the standard default stuff too.

TIL the board game "Settlers of Catan" was created by a dental technician, Klaus Teuber. It was so popular he retired to become a game designer. He went on to win Germany's Game of the Year 4 times.
It's 2-3 hours with computerized rules enforcement : https://triplea-game.org/

Anyone remember axis and allies?
There is also TripleA, which is open source and has a large variety of maps and rule variants. https://triplea-game.org/

Humans Need Play
Side note: I really liked Axis and Allies, played it several times as a young adult with a few close friends.
There is a nice open-source implementation of it, if you want to "play" instead of work. [0] However, it misses the social part.

Game info
My advice would be to try all the official versions on TripleA (https://triplea-game.org/) to get a feel for the version you like before you spend any money on a new game.

A noob for for something good...in space.
I have been working with my own Open Source 4X space game called Open Realm of Stars. Link to Github and Itchio. There is exploration part, where you can discover new planets, gas giants, space anomalies and space monsters. There is also possibility to tame those monsters and take them your control. Exploring depends really on scanners you have attached your ship designs. Space combat is also quite interesting since it really depends on your ship designs.

Time for a new game
I have been working with Open Realm of Stars( Itchio and Github ) . Main inspirations have been classic old Stars! and Galactic Civilization II. Trying out does not cost anything since game if free and open source. You can even suggest new feature(s)/improvements and I try to do those when possible. If you are still skeptical, you can watch videos about from my YT channel
