Super weird color bug driving me crazy
Figured out myself. xiyaowong/transparent.nvim: Remove all background colors to make nvim transparent (github.com) this is the plugin that's causing this bug even when transparency is disabled.

The website for the plugin makes it seem as if you can enable it just by putting enable = true in the setup options, but I gather you've tried that?

Theme developers: how do you manage variants of a base theme?
Like others suggested, I used to pre-generate multiple .json files for my theme. I am currently creating a much more customizable version of my theme, where it's impractical to generate a .json and a list entry for every possible configuration of the theme. Instead, I'll be shipping just 2 .json files for the default dark and light configurations, then I'll have my extension modify these files at runtime according to the values user sets in VS Code settings. The changes are reflected instantly thanks to the undocumented package.json contributes.themes[]._watch = true option.
