Any hope for Neovim terminal?
I've managed to developed a simple (and hacky) but yet useful solution for turning neovim somewhat similar to tmux, by making some modifications to a abandoned Vim plugin called tiler.vim, you can find my fork here, it comes with a set of commands that allow you to open and close splits and tabs and navigate between them, it's mostly experimental at the moment, and needs some polishing, but it get's the job done

More flexible window management?
Check out winshift.nvim (https://github.com/sindrets/winshift.nvim) and combine it with hydra.nvim (https://github.com/anuvyklack/hydra.nvim | https://github.com/anuvyklack/hydra.nvim/wiki/Windows-and-buffers-management )

Horizontal split nvim-tree and aerial.nvim ?
I tried the plugin Winshift to move windows around and put Aerial below Nvim-tree, and it works well!

question about changing splits layout
Well, according to my experience by ctrl-w H|J|K|L I was able to adapt 4 window into whatever I wanted. Mostly it was enough for my workflow (since I'm also switching buffers or sometimes I'm using tabs) For more windows I occasionally use https://github.com/sindrets/winshift.nvim but it is only for neovim and I'm not aware of alternatives for pure vim.

smart-splits.nvim - smart, directional split resizing and navigation
Definitely gonna give this plugin a try! I would also recommend checking out winshift.nvim which adds a "move windows around" mode which is also way more intuitive than Vim's own way of moving windows around.
