tilemancer
GIMP script to generate sprite sheets (by malteehrlen)
GimpSpriteAtlas
GIMP plug-in to create a spriteatlas (aka spritetexture or spritesheet). Takes all layers as images and compiles them into one sprite atlas texture, using a 2D packing algorithm so that the final texture image takes as little space as possible. Also outputs a TexturePacker JSON, LibGDX, CSS or XML coordinates file. (by BdR76)

How do I make Script-fu create and open copy of current file?
To make it easier for them, I made the necessary changes (had to do this to confirm whether the approach works for this post), and filed a pull request to the author's repository: https://github.com/malteehrlen/tilemancer/pull/2

Finally Published My First Game After 7 Months, Here's What I Learned (a brain dump of helpful links and info)
One thing that's important if you do gamedev is to setup Gimp to export spritesheets. I personally used Tilemancer Plug-In for spritesheets. There is another sprite sheet plug-in available if you are just googling around and it is BAD. It will shift frames around at export and you will end up with a jittery animation that should be smooth, so I recommend sticking with Tilemancer personally.

GIMP plug-in to convert different size images into a SpriteAtlas (aka packed sprite texture)
Just wanted to mention I've created a GIMP SpriteAtlas plug-in to convert different sized images into a SpriteAtlas, sometimes called a sprite texture.
What are some alternatives?
When comparing tilemancer and GimpSpriteAtlas you can also consider the following projects:
tilemancer - GIMP script to generate sprite sheets
MagicSpriteSheet - Load and add special effect to sprite sheet
c64engine - a game engine for the c64
MERTS-Modded-NERTS - A simple retexture mod for NERTS!
MaterialMapGenerator - A Blender Add-on to easily generate Material Maps from an Image Texture with just one click.
