Be honest. How much time did you spend customizing your editor?
I don’t even like the idea of automating a dev setup but if you do I’d recommend fig: https://github.com/wincent/wincent/blob/main/fig/README.md.

Finally, I got my NeoVim config to load in about 150m with about 70 plugins!!!!!!!!!
Alright. I fixed the first script. I moved it here. I borrowed it from wincent, and modified it a little bit.

GitHub’s Engineering Team has moved to Codespaces
You can have it clone your dotfiles repo automatically and run a set-up script:
https://docs.github.com/en/codespaces/customizing-your-codes...
I also have a very bespoke dotfiles config that predates Codespaces (https://github.com/wincent/wincent), so I made a thin wrapper around it that makes it work (https://github.com/wincent/dotfiles). For people with less complicated set-ups (ie. basically the entire universe), it is pretty straightforward.
