scalar_objects VS php-docker

I know there are such experiments, but it's unlikely to become a part of the language any time soon :(

For the love of god yes please yes this 1000x. I'd like to throw in scalar objects too.

Nikita Popov tried to solve the problem with this extension, but it never got wide support. The problem is that without users asking for this feature, Jetbrains and psalm/phpstan will not integrate it. But w/o their support, users cannot not even try the extension as everything will be shown as error.

These as it would remove the need to even care about the old function names which would exist for B/C purposes. We'd then be able to use primitive types as objects with functions to do all their manipulation as needed.

It's been possible for quite a while but you have to enable a custom extension: https://github.com/nikic/scalar_objects and create an implementation of the class wrapper. I made one quite some time ago which is probably very incomplete: https://github.com/RikudouSage/scalar-objects.

That's the first I've heard of it, and I like it! I can't tell you the number of trips to php.net to look at argument order for a function. Is it haystack/needle, or needle/haystack? Of course it could turn into the same thing w/ argument names (is it whole_name or full_name?), but I'm going to use it.

Prepare to spend a fair bit of time reading and going back to phptherightway.com and php.net. I've also found this Tutorial from Envato Tuts+ to be quite good.

All I want to do with php is to have a recurring navbar on a website. I don't know what to do next. So far I've tried php.net's manual, w3scchool's tutorial and the set up part of first five recommended php tutorials on youtube. I have also spent hours on stackoverflow, which got me even more confused. The more I read, the less nothing makes sense to me and I don't know where the problem is.

I tried looking at the upgrade from 7.4 to 8.0 docs on php.net but I don't see anything regarding any changes to this function. Any ideas?

Does anyone else have trouble getting into php.net without some human verification page popping up first?

I've gone to php.net probably thousands of times over 15 years and have never seen this. If I saw it, like this user did, I'd be curious.

Not necessarily, a docker image can build from source. In fact, the official PHP docker image is built from source. See https://github.com/docker-library/php/blob/master/8.2/alpine3.18/cli/Dockerfile
