Something similar that I’ve kept around is a kind of fade in. So I’ll have inactive windows in grey and my focused one in white. When I change window, I also have a script that sets the focused border to medium gray, then brightens it up to white over the course of a tenth of a second. https://github.com/sagotsky/.dotfiles/blob/master/home/scripts/dk-border-flash (this is for dk, but the concept applies anywhere you can change border color in a script).

How polished are you looking for? I used this one several years ago and it wasn’t too much effort. https://github.com/sagotsky/.dotfiles/blob/master/home/scripts/music-remote.sh. Haven’t kept up with it since it was mostly for ssh from my phone and the Spotify client serves the same purpose.
