Quadrillion Rows Example
I wonder how your canvas solution holds up against the @resembli/react-virtualized-window library.
-
A simplified explanation of how @resembli/react-virtualized-window virtualizes DOM views and how it prevents content flashes when users scroll quickly.
To answer your other points: - Variable heights are supported but you need to a way to determine the position of items in your window. The way @resembli/react-virtualized-window can be found here.

A new DOM virtualization library for React
I'm keen to get people's feedback and use cases. Checkout the docs at resembli.com or the code here.

Quadrillion Rows Example
I'm the author of regular-table, one of the alternatives mentioned in the accompanying blog. We went through a similar set of requirements to OP (and did at one point use fin-hypergrid as well, and also the excellent phosphor-datagrid which is now lumino-datagrid), and came to a slightly different conclusion regarding rendering. We ultimately decided to revert to (albeit bespoke) virtual DOM rendering for many of the same reasons mentioned by other commenters, namely:
-
JupyterLab 3.0
The original author of Phosphor decided to stop working on it, so JupyterLab forked it into Lumino - https://github.com/jupyterlab/lumino
What are some alternatives?
react-virtualized - React components for efficiently rendering large lists and tabular data
jupyter-cadquery - An extension to render cadquery objects in JupyterLab via pythreejs
Glide Data Grid - 🚀 Glide Data Grid is a no compromise, outrageously react fast data grid with rich rendering, first class accessibility, and full TypeScript support.
commuter - 🚎 Notebook sharing hub
jupyterlab-classic - JupyterLab distribution with a retro look and feel 🌅
Pluto.jl - 🎈 Simple reactive notebooks for Julia
luac-parser-rs - lua bytecode parser written in Rust using nom, part of metaworm's lua decompiler, support lua51/lua52/lua53/lua54/luajit/luau https://luadec.metaworm.site/
regular-table - A regular <table> library, for async and virtual data models.
monaco-editor-vue3 - Monaco Editor for Vue3
web-client-ui - Deephaven Web Client UI
