The number of mentions indicates the total number of mentions that we've tracked plus the number of user suggested alternatives.
Stars - the number of stars that a project has on GitHub. Growth - month over month growth in stars.
Activity is a relative number indicating how actively a project is being developed. Recent commits have higher weight than older ones.
For example, an activity of 9.0 indicates that a project is amongst the top 10% of the most actively developed projects that we are tracking.

What data structure is used instead of associative arrays or hash tables (in SML in particular or FP in general)?
Here's a hash table implementation in SML for example: https://github.com/eatonphil/ponyo/blob/master/src/Container/Dict.sml.

What's the standard format of documentation comments (aka docstrings)?
mldoc (from Ponyo)

What are you favorite guides for getting started with SML today?
Chris Cannam's blog has some nice writing on the differences in getting compilers working and some general formatting thoughts [1,2]. Alex Alegre's A Tour of Standard ML [3] is pretty nice, too, and I think it starts to get through your 3rd bullet. Jake Zimmerman's blog has some nice setup information for developing Standard ML with Vim [4]. Naturally there's your writing at ponyo.org, too.

Suggestions for Intermediate SML Projects to Study
I'll throw out my neglected standard library project, Ponyo, as one that is not advanced at least as the Standard ML compilers or other languages implemented in Standard ML.

Parser generators vs. handwritten parsers: surveying major language implementations in 2021
They are basically handwritten parsers. Take a look at this parser in Standard ML for parsing Standard ML. The entire parser is using combinators to parse. It doesn't use a third-party library like parsec but it's basically the same thing as far as I understand.

Are there any efficient key-value map/dictionary implementations in SML?
Example of use [here](https://github.com/eatonphil/ponyo/blob/master/src/Net/Http/Response.sml#L8)

Can a language ever be faster than its parent language?
I am not the first one to come up with this idea, but I rediscovered it independently. Also, cmlib's implementation uses partial functions, whereas mine uses only total ones.

Are there any efficient key-value map/dictionary implementations in SML?
Check out cmlib (https://github.com/standardml/cmlib), or if you're using SML/NJ, ORD_MAP implementations (https://www.smlnj.org/doc/smlnj-lib/Util/sig-ORD_MAP.html).
What are some alternatives?
When comparing ponyo and cmlib you can also consider the following projects:
mlton - The MLton repository
gcc
Ally - Pronounced L-I, Ally is a programming language with semi-optional types.
SMLDoc - SMLDoc is a tool for generating API documentation in HTML format from doc comments in source code written in Standard ML.
