It's pretty easy to get GPX data to GeoJSON using mapbox/togeojson or tmcw/togeojson. The underlying structure of GPX, and KML, files is XML so it common to see these libraries support both formats.

Community/collaborative route builder
Mapbox seems to have a tool to convert between gpx and geoJSON. So we could make a repo with an archive of routes in various file formats. There could be a GH action that renders out the proposed changes on a pull request. For the non-techy folks, the routes could be rendered to a static Github page.

Using gpx data and calculating distance and possible map overlay
Most map libraries (Leaflet, Mapbox, ESRI, OpenLayers, etc) use the GeoJSON data format so the best way to start is to convert your gpx file to GeoJSON. You can use this library or there’s even online converters. From there, I’d just follow a tutorial for adding a GeoJSON line layer to your map library of choice.
