Hi HN! We’re Marc and Iuliia from Papermark (https://papermark.io). We're building an open-source, modern document sharing platform with real-time engagement analytics and 100% customization.

It all started as a tweet [1] and led to our launch on Product Hunt [2] last month. We crossed over 1000 stars and over 10 contributors on GitHub (https://github.com/mfts/papermark).

Incumbents, like DocSend, founded in the early 2010s have been acquired already and just don't innovate anymore. Their main priority is enterprise clients.

As founders and developers ourselves we always felt that our needs are not being served. We struggle to get actionable insights when sending pitch decks to investors or sales proposals to customers. We are missing the flexibility and integrations with our existing applications and tech stack.

That’s why we are building Papermark.

Our bigger vision

A developer-friendly document sharing platform doesn’t exist yet! We believe that document analytics should be available to anyone that is creating and sharing documents.

- Rich observability: Don’t get left in the dark when sharing a document. Papermark will provide full transparency by exposing all document-related events through webhooks.

Wasp, or Web Application Specification, is a declarative full-stack framework introduced in 2020 with the primary goal of addressing the complexities inherent in modern web development. Traditionally, developers had to be concerned about setting up authentication, managing databases, client-to-server connections, etc., but repetitive tasks take time away from actually developing the software.

Have a look at the graph above. Laravel and Rails have been around for 13-15 years! The JavaScript frameworks being used in comparison are just getting started, with some of them, like Wasp and Redwood, at similar stages in their development as Laravel and Rails were during their initial years.

Today, I’m currently working as the founding Developer Relations Engineer for Wasp where I build things like OpenSaaS.sh, a free, open-source SaaS starter template for React and NodeJS, along with Stripe, OpenAI, and AWS S3 integration. It’s based on what I learned from building my first profitable SaaS app, CoverLetterGPT.xyz, which currently has over 100 customers and makes ~$500 per month! Nothing crazy, but something I’m still proud of.

We used Wasp’s built-in auth which makes your auth totally yours and independent of any 3rd party service. Under the hood, it uses Lucia and Arctic to give you email, username and multiple OAuth providers out of the box.

Wasp (https://github.com/wasp-lang/wasp) has actually worked out quite well! It just crossed 10k stars on GitHub and is currently the fastest-growing full-stack framework for React & Node.js. It's being used in both startups and enterprises.

Although Wasp has its own DSL/compiler, the secret to its adoption is probably that it works with the existing stack, like React & Node.js. From the developer's perspective, it feels like a framework; the "compiler" part is just what gives it its superpowers.

Another example of a React framework utilizing Vite to give their users a SPA experience is Wasp - a full-stack framework for React & Node.js that drastically cuts the boilerplate. Despite being a full-stack framework, it focuses on the standardized approach of deploying a client-side React app with a Node.js server to be as portable as possible. With this approach, you can deploy your app pretty much anywhere, as well as self-host it, which is also a thing that we mentioned before in this article.

We started with one of Wasp's templates to create a working, full-stack web application backed by a database. We migrated the application's configuration from a local SQLite database to an external PostgreSQL database to prepare for deployment. When building AI Blog Articles, I decided to get started as fast as possible. So I looked for a free boilerplate and stumbled upon Open SaaS, which used YC-backed Wasp. It is a full-stack React + NodeJS + Prisma that takes 8 hours to get started with.
