If you wanna come back to the paths of the lord, you could give a try to Nyoom.nvim, it's an nvim config very similar to Doom Emacs written in the lisp Fennel which then compiles to Lua. VimL sucks

How do you turn off the yellow highlighting after your done with the search?
I used :noh for a while but now I’m using https://github.com/rktjmp/highlight-current-n.nvim, which does more than what you might be looking for (it only highlights the current match).

Plugin: bling.vim
highlight-current-n may do what you want, though it "holds" the highlight until you move, it doesn't flash.
