You could try to see how netrw.nvim puts icons in the sign column.

I use netrw as well, and find it works pretty well. I do like adding fancy icons to it with this plugin; makes it look a bit nicer and more obvious that I'm not looking at a typical file buffer.

netrw technically via netrw.nvim, recently converted from Dirvish.
