MIT robot solves Rubik's cube in under .038 secs
They're using the min2phase code to solve it. So yes they are solving it and it still is code interfacing with mechanics. Katz and Jared Di Carlo were trying to push the mechanical side of things so you are correct there. Nonetheless, they are using a fast algorithm.

Yo I had this DREAM
I checked for existing generic implementations, looks like this one is only 3x3 https://github.com/bsehovac/the-cube, but this one also allows 5x5 https://github.com/davidwhogg/MagicCube so it might be a good starting point or reference.
