Nope, plenty of real world applications and real day to day usage, metrics and exchanges of value, here is one example, Ocean Marketplace - https://market.oceanprotocol.com/ , started tiny at first but now several thousand data sets, algos and datatokens, also their staking/dao/reward site - https://df.oceandao.org/ - started with nothing, now at like 40 million Ocean staked and locked away anywhere from 1 month to 4 years.
