I feel like the most useful thing to know for anyone still using Magento 1 is that they should probably immediately upgrade the codebase to openmage https://github.com/OpenMage/magento-lts because jfc security, and then seriously consider if their life would be improved with moving to some cloud service that manages security for them.

If you still want Magento you can try OpenMage - its a clone of Magento 1 which is much simpler to use. The unfortunate thing about it is that there's lack of plugin support for it.

Migrating to OpenMage 19.4.14 (code here https://github.com/OpenMage/magento-lts/releases/tag/v19.4.14) can be a fairly painless process. This is the simplest and easiest way to move to OpenMage.

Where to get Patches for m1.9?
Openmage have two different release branches. One is to patch their version of Magento, the other is to patch original Magento. Here is the latest patches for the original Magento. I strongly suggest using this to patch up your site - https://github.com/OpenMage/magento-lts/releases/tag/v19.4.11
