If you do get around to a different internal representation, you might want to take a look at what maple trees do for gaps tracking (see also here). They have special "gaps" nodes (maple_arange_64) which track the largest gaps in their children.

I switched to binary Firefox, because I see no difference in performance with compiled one :( I tried -O3 too. Why do you use compiled Firefox?
