Private engine with actually good results
I use librex it’s not very popular but it works pretty well actually. It also searches torrents which can be pretty helpful. Uses no JavaScript and is completely open source. Fetches from google and various torrent sites.

How do I install php packages that aren't in the repos?
I'm trying to install librex, and in the wiki, it says you need to install the packages php php-fpm php-dom php-curl, but only php php-fpm are in the repos.
- very hard to ignore this.

Then don't. If it's because 1337x is blocked, use something like Librex and click on the torrents tab.

Another SH search engine
Here's what I found today: https://gitlab.com/astiango/astian-search/ (demo here: https://astiango.com) Looks to be fetching results from other (commercial) search engines, so probably not really private, but at least it's very easy to setup (if you have apache+php running - you just throw the repo in there).
