take a look at snmp and librenms https://www.librenms.org/ I have been using this for years and it has never let me down. You can even then import data into Grafana if you want.

Python in SRE?
Understand your organization structure, know what all services are deployed, build a service map and dependencies, understand what all key indicators/metrics are important.
