The number of mentions indicates the total number of mentions that we've tracked plus the number of user suggested alternatives.
Stars - the number of stars that a project has on GitHub. Growth - month over month growth in stars.
Activity is a relative number indicating how actively a project is being developed. Recent commits have higher weight than older ones.
For example, an activity of 9.0 indicates that a project is amongst the top 10% of the most actively developed projects that we are tracking.

Is the Zen kernel still useful for gaming ?
Claims on this are all over the place, tbh. I don't know what to believe. But check out: https://github.com/graysky2/kernel_compiler_patch

Is it worth building your own kernel?
This guy also provides benchmarks for native vs generic kernels.
-
What things would you recommend others?
You can build your own custom kernel with -O3, 1000Hz timer and -march=native https://github.com/graysky2/kernel_compiler_patch for both better performance and responsiveness (and maybe features, if you tweak using menuconfig further). Most other custom kernels, e.g. Zen, tend to break compatibility with other stuff, so don't be surprised if your machine doesn't boot or the Nvidia driver doesn't compile

TIFU by not disabling an option in Windows that seemingly made my PC stutter for the last 3 years
Gentoo is not like that and honestly its easy (once you get it) making you own kernel and all its not that hard frfr here is my git hub https://github.com/mrturcot/Gentoo-Stuff

Trying to emerge chromium yields this kinda cryptic error...
Here is an example of my portage dir (env & package.env) so you kinda know what to do. https://github.com/mrturcot/Gentoo-Stuff/tree/master/portage

I'm installing Gentoo
You have a bootable kernel with the bin. So if you compile a broken kernel boot back into the bin kernel. Tweak the config. Rebuild, reboot. Rinse and repeat until you have a clean custom kernel. Here is my kernel config for ryzen 2700 and Rx 590 for example https://github.com/mrturcot/Gentoo-Stuff/tree/master/filthy-kernel

Is there anything similar to Arch's aconfmgr for Gentoo? A program that can track, manage and restore your Gentoo configuration?
Yeah or just do it yourself https://github.com/mrturcot/Gentoo-Stuff/tree/master/portage
- I did a Gentoo thing

After a 3 day gauntlet I've ascended to Gentoo. 986 source packages total. The only ones I added were kitty, mpv, qbittorrent & ungoogled-chromium. My app drawer is those 4 with settings app lol. I imagine this is what climbing Mount Everest feels like...
Anyway here is my GitHub I got my Gentoo stuff on there check it out if you want https://github.com/mrturcot/Gentoo-Stuff
