I'm also working on a tool to assist learners of Japanese. The idea is to aggregate data from various resources and make it easy to query in natural ways. In particular I wanted to be able to look up unknown kanji using mnemonics for the constituent radicals. It's still an early work-in-progress, but you can check it out here.

I remember stumbling upon a JMDict/Json Project here, but I have never used it since it didn't fit my needs (the Spanish glosses are way simpler than the English ones, so many tags are not used).
