Looking for comfortable headphones with decent bass for under $250.
All models have been - according to me - lacking in bass. SRH840A less so than the others. The lack of bass has not been much of a problem because I can increase i via software and at that point the MDR-1A sound the best to me. Here is the impulse response file I use. Should provide an idea of hwhat kind of sound I like.

Looking to replace a pair of MDR-1A with something in a similar budget.
Preferred tonal balance - I like bass and to some extent clear vocals. I find most headphones lacking in bass and often end up using this preset with a convolver which adds a decent amount of bass.

Dell XPS 15 9520: Improve sound (mostly bass) in Ubuntu 22.04
Install EasyEffects and play around with the sound effects. I have a preset made for my Surface Laptop 3: https://github.com/RaduTek/Surface-EasyEffects . You can start from it and adjust it to get a better sound. Just be careful with the volumes and the lower frequencies. Don't boost the lower frequencies that the speakers can't audibly produce as you could put unnecessary wear on the drivers.

What is "the MacBook Air M1" of Windows laptops (that I can easily install Linux on?)
Also note that you won't get the same audio quality out of a laptop's built in speakers on Linux. They only sound good due to the custom audio tuning done in the driver. Still, you can use Pipewire and EasyEffects to make your own preset to get better audio, like I did for my Surface Laptop: https://github.com/RaduTek/Surface-EasyEffects
- Made a EasyEffects preset for my Surface Laptop (3) that improves the audio quality from the internal speakers
