Gamejams, gamemaker and low skill
There is GM48 game jam, which is in every 3 months. This is GameMaker only, so everyone uses GM for that jam, so that means every game you can find in the jam site is done with GameMaker: https://gm48.net/ GM48 starts in end of the January, so it does overlap with Global Game Jam. But if themes are compatible, you could do multi-entry ;)

Biggest mistake(s) as a new GameMaker Studio developer?
My recommendation to get over that threshold is to participate in a game jam. The local community game jam is the gm(48), which I myself organize. I have seen many game jam testimonials from gm(48) saying that participating in the game jam have helped them a ton with the motivation to getting started to go beyond tutorials and actually make something.
