I used to extend an open source platform called Apache Fineract for a finance startup and most of the issues I faced were trying to understand accounting concepts and jargons (traunching, amortizations). Have a look at the https://fineract.apache.org and its community. Fineract looks fairly strong in Africa, with a lot of developers coming from the region. You might find a mentor there, or a group that you can be part of or contribute to. Also you don't have to be a developer, there's plenty of areas to work on or volunteer.
